Born in Vienna (Austria) in 1940, Eva Lootz has lived and worked in Madrid since 1965. In her home town she took up studies in Fine Arts, Musicology, Cinematography and Philosophy, although her career and artistic track record were shaped mainly in Spain. She also became a citizen of this country. The work of Eva Lootz is characterized by a central concern that traces the overlapping region between matter and language from different angles.
After her beginnings that revealed a clear intention to transgress the historical limits of art, as her work became the imprint left by a process (a period from which we have her plates of ephemeral materials like cotton, earth, wadding, paraffin-covered seeds, and her creations with agglutinating liquids including sealing wax, synthetic glues and wax), Lootz casts a wide-ranging and exhaustive reflection that seeks to take us back to the source of the devaluation of matter versus the idea. In most cultures this devaluation runs parallel to the degradation of the value accorded to women. In the course of these reflections she studies the processes by which the minerals and raw materials are extracted and treated, the exchange routes, the social and cultural repercussions, the signs left on the landscape and on the language.
Better known for her sculptures, Eva Lootz has always worked and experimented with different artistic means of expression, like engraving, photography, sound, video and installations. The importance of the drawing ranks foremost in her work, where, in the style of a sketch book, her criteria and concerns are reflected.
Her work is represented in numerous private collections and public institutions both in Spain and abroad, namely the National Art Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Contemporary Art Museum in Barcelona, the Abstract Art Museum in Cuenca and The Chase Manhattan Bank headquarters in New York. In 1994 she was granted the National Fine Arts Award by the Ministry of Culture. This year, in recognition of her professional and personal track record the Casa de la Moneda Foundation conferred on her the 2009 edition of the Tomas Francisco Prieto Award.
