The Tomás Francisco Prieto Award, General Engraver of the Mint of King Charles III, was revived in 1990 by the Mint Foundation in the form of the ‘Award for an entire work’ and with the aim of promoting the art of the medal among the great names on the Spanish artistic scene, as the awarding of the prize implies a commitment on the part of the winning artist to design a medal with a free theme.

This medal is minted by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda, with a limited edition of 225 copper coins, 40 silver coins and only two gold coins.

31th edition of the Royal Mint's ‘Tomás Francisco Prieto’ Medal Award 2024

The National Mint and Stamp Factory-Royal Mint awards the annual ‘Tomás Francisco Prieto Prize’ to an artist in recognition of their creative career in the field of plastic arts.

The jury appointed for this occasion, meeting on 7 November 2024, unanimously agreed to award the ‘31st Tomás Francisco Prieto Prize’ for 2024 to the artist ESTHER FERRER.

The jury, chaired by Ms Isabel Valldecabres Ortiz and with Mr Francisco Fernández Cervantes acting as secretary, was made up of:

Ms Yolanda Romero Gómez, Curator of the Bank of Spain Collection

Mr Javier Blas Benito, appointed by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando/National Engraving

Ms Beatriz Herráez Diéguez, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country, Artium Museoa

Mr Guillermo Navarro Oltra, appointed by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Castilla la Mancha.

As a result of the aforementioned award, the FNMT-RCM has minted this medal, the original design of which was created by the award-winning artist.

The jury highlighted this visual artist's ‘great interest in medallic art and the free vision that Esther Ferrer can bring to this award’. Ferrer is one of the leading representatives of performance art in Spain and the work of this Basque artist, winner of the Velázquez Prize and the National Prize for Visual Arts, is part of the minimalist and conceptual art movement.

Esther Ferrer

Born in San Sebastián in 1937, she is an interdisciplinary artist, considered one of the best artists of her generation. In the early 1960s, she created the first Taller Libre Expresión (Free Expression Workshop) together with the painter José Antonio Sistiaga, which was the seed for parallel activities. In 1967, she joined the performance group TAJ, created by Walter Marchetti, Juan Hidalgo and Ramón Barce. Her work includes objects, photographs, installations and paintings based on the series of prime numbers or Pi. She is also known for her performance art and radio creations.

In 1973, she moved to Paris, where she has lived ever since.

In 1999, she was selected to represent Spain at the Venice Biennale.

In 2008, she received the Spanish National Prize for Plastic Arts.

In 2012, in recognition of her career, she was awarded the Gure Artea Prize.

In 2014, she received the MAV (Women in the Visual Arts) Prize, the Marie Claire de l'Art Contemporain Prize and the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts.

In 2017, she won the Los Bragales Estampa Collection Prize.

He has exhibited his artwork at the Reina Sofía Art Centre (Madrid), Galerie Satelite (Paris), Koldo Mitxelena (San Sebastián), Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art (Seville), Museum of Fine Arts (Rio de Janeiro), Georges Pompidou National Centre (Paris), and Galician Centre for Contemporary Art, among others.
