In 2023, a new series of collector coins called ‘Jewels of the Mint Museum’ was launched. In 2025, the Royal Mint is putting the second series of these numismatic gems into circulation, which can be admired in our Museum.

The sixth of these pieces is an 8-escudo coin from 1770 minted at the CECA in Guatemala. It is a unique piece that can only be seen at our Casa de la Moneda Museum. The obverse features a bust of Charles III facing right.

The reverse bears the king's coat of arms, surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

JEWELLERY MUSEUM II 1770 GUATEMALA 8 ESCUDOS

The Guatemalan mint was founded in 1731 by Felipe V, and until 1773 coins were minted with the mint mark ‘G’. After the earthquake of 1773, it was moved to the city of Nueva Guatemala, which changed the mint mark to ‘NG’. This 8 escudos coin is unique and can only be seen in the Casa de la Moneda Museum. The coin is in excellent condition. On the obverse is a bust of Charles III facing right, again with the type of portrait known as ‘rat face’, with the legend: CAROLUS·III·D·G· - HISP·ET·IND·REX/ 1770 (Charles III, by the grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies).

On the reverse, it bears the king's coat of arms, surrounded by the collar of the Golden Fleece and the legend: ·IN·UTROQ·FELIX – AUSPICE·DEO· (Happy in both [worlds] under the gaze of God) / G – G (mint of Guatemala). Diameter: 36.7 mm; weight: 26.9 g.
