The year 2026 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth in Granada of Don Álvaro de Bazán y Guzmán. In recognition of his extraordinary historical legacy, the Royal Spanish Mint (FNMT-RCM) is issuing a limited-edition silver commemorative coin with a maximum mintage of 4,000 pieces.
The reverse features a portrait of Don Álvaro de Bazán y Guzmán, painted by Rafael Tegeo, together with a depiction of the stern lantern of La Loba, the flagship galley commanded by the Spanish admiral at the Battle of Lepanto. Both original works are preserved in the Naval Museum of Madrid.
The obverse features a full-colour reproduction of the coat of arms of Don Álvaro de Bazán y Guzmán, 1st Marquis of Santa Cruz, with the year of issue, 2026, appearing below it.
