To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, a special series of collector coins has been issued. Reflecting this theme in their designs, the coins highlight Spain’s contribution to the success of the war in favour of the thirteen American colonies.

On the obverse of the first coin, within an ornate decorative base from which two arms emerge, appears an anonymous portrait of José Solano y Bote.

The reverse features an image representing the “Fleet of the Hundred Ships”.

250TH USA - SOLANO Y BOTE SILVER COIN

Admiral José Solano y Bote was one of the most distinguished naval officers in the Spanish fleet during the conflict against the British.

The obverse of this coin pays tribute to the Extremaduran sailor, whose escort of a convoy comprising 105 ships and 12,500 soldiers to reinforce the front line (1780) was hailed as a remarkable feat.

Upon his return to Spain, he was named Marquis of the Socorro for his invaluable contribution to the war. Years later, he became the IX Captain General of the Navy.

The reverse evokes that fleet of 105 ships (also referenced in the legend), commemorating the convoy that transported over 12,000 soldiers to American territory to fight in Florida. Just one year later (1781), the conquest of West Florida was completed at the Battle of Pensacola, led by General Bernardo de Gálvez.
