To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, a special series of collector coins has been issued.
Reflecting this theme in their designs, the coins highlight Spain’s contribution to the success of the war in favour of the thirteen American colonies.
On the obverse of the coin, within an ornate decorative base from which two arms emerge, appears a portrait of Bernardo de Gálvez, painted by the Valencian artist Mariano Salvador Maella.
The reverse of the coin features an image of the Battle of Pensacola, taken from an 18th‑century engraving, depicting the Spanish troops commanded by General Gálvez achieving a decisive victory over the British forces.

The obverse of this coin features a reproduction of a portrait of General Bernardo de Gálvez painted by Mariano Salvador Maella.
Bernardo de Gálvez was a key figure in the American War of Independence, leading the Spanish campaigns across the Mississippi territory, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico between 1779 and 1781.
As Governor of Louisiana, he successfully captured major British strongholds such as Baton Rouge, Mobile and, most notably, Pensacola. His victory at Pensacola on 8 May 1781 proved decisive: he captured an entire garrison along with valuable arsenals, weakening Britain’s presence in the region and restoring the peninsula to the Spanish Crown.
For his bravery, he was granted the title Count of Gálvez and the distinction “Yo solo,” inscribed on his coat of arms by order of King Charles III.
Gálvez also played an essential role in supplying and supporting the American revolutionary forces, securing the delivery of weapons, ammunition, and provisions via New Orleans and the southern Spanish territories. By blockading the port to prevent British access to the Mississippi and capturing key Caribbean coastal positions, he diverted British resources and helped hasten victory for the Thirteen Colonies.
His legacy endures through his posthumous recognition as an honorary citizen of the United States and the presence of his portrait in the Capitol, symbolising the importance of Spain’s contribution to American independence.
