The obverse of the coin is an image of the Church of Santa María del Naranco.

Santa María del Naranco is an old palace located four kilometers from Oviedo, on the southern slope of Mount Naranco. Originally not projected as a church, it was the Aula Regia of the palace complex that King Ramiro I had built on the outskirts of the capital of the kingdom of Asturias, and was completed in the year 842. His artistic style is the so-called art Asturian or "ramirense", within the pre-Romanesque period.

The architectural complex to which this building belonged also included the nearby church of San Miguel de Lillo, erected only a hundred meters away. However, because of the collapse of the head and part of the ships of San Miguel, the Aula Regia was transformed into a church, probably during the twelfth century, since the Silense chronicle of 1150 already registers it as a temple of Santa Maria.

The temple was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in December 1985.
