MINT MUSEUM'S JEWELS I (2023) FULL SET

The centens are the pinnacle of Spanish numismatics. Spectacular coins of almost 340 grams of gold that were only minted in the Real Ingenio of Segovia on rare occasions in the 17th century. They are beautiful coins with very careful workmanship that exemplify how Segovia had the best minting technology in those years. They are very rare pieces. The existing specimens can be counted on the fingers of the hands; Fortunately we can all see the only coin dated 1623 in the Mint Museum, whose entry is free.

Glenn Murray explains to us in his book “Boat and Technology. “Fifties, hundreds and eight escudos” that in 1623 there were special coinages of fiftieths, 8 escudos and 100 escudos; Today, copies of all three modules are preserved. Specifically, seven hundreds were minted on September 12 or 13, 1623. This coinage took place in front of Philip IV and Charles Stuart, Prince of Wales. It was made as a way to entertain the Prince during his visit, to whom three copies were given. The remaining four were taken to Madrid, of which only the honoree survives today. Much more detail is given in Murray's book, as these special coinages of 1623 are very well documented.
