Climate change and its effects, as well as the loss of biodiversity, are accelerating the disappearance or reduction of the population of certain living beings. Some one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, warns the United Nations, and proposes to raise public awareness of the importance of taking urgent action to prevent this list of endangered species from growing.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the most comprehensive source of information on the global conservation status of animal, fungal and plant species. Assessing the extinction risk of thousands of species is a powerful tool to inform and catalyse biodiversity conservation action. This is not only important for the species themselves, but wildlife conservation also has positive effects on human life.
For this reason, the FNMT-RCM is issuing a collection of 16 colour coins dedicated to endangered animals included in the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), through a series of coins with a selection of animals that for one reason or another are globally relevant because they are listed as Critically Endangered (CR).
The collection is presented in an album-box that includes the sixteen coins and leaflets with information on each of the animals reproduced in the pieces, in Spanish and English.
