“275th Anniversary Francisco de Goya”.

For the year 2021, it is agreed to issue, mint and put into circulation a set of collector coins to commemorate the 275th anniversary of the birth of Francisco de Goya.

On the obverse, the work The sleep of reason produces monsters, executed by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes between 1796 and 1797 and now held at the Prado, Madrid. The motifs and legends are surrounded by an allegorical border alluding to the Goyaesque strawberry girl (her hair loosely held in a snood decorated with strawberries).

On the reverse, the work Self-portrait of Francisco Goya y Lucientes, painter, executed by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes between 1797 and 1799 and now held at the Prado, Madrid. The motifs and legends are surrounded by an allegorical border alluding to the Goyaesque strawberry girl.

The etching "El sueño de la razón produce monstruos" is an engraving from the series “Los Caprichos2 by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. It is numbered 43 in the series of 80 stamps. It was published in 1799.

“Los Caprichos” are above all a satire conceived as a means to combat the vices of men and the absurdities of human behavior.

The etching Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Pintor is an engraving from the “Los Caprichos” series by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. It ranks first in the series of 80 prints. It was published in 1799.

“Los Caprichos” are above all a satire conceived as a means to combat the vices of men and the absurdities of human behavior. From the first moment it was very common to interpret the Caprichos as a scathing criticism of the society of the time, sometimes general, but sometimes directed against specific institutions or politicians.
