250TH USA - FCO. SAAVEDRA SILVER COIN
The Royal Commissioner Francisco de Saavedra y Sangronis, featured on the obverse of this coin, played a pivotal role as royal commissioner in expelling the British from the Gulf of Mexico during the campaign led by Bernardo de Gálvez.
He also planned the Franco‑Spanish offensive to recapture Jamaica, the principal British base in the Caribbean.
His logistical planning and strategic acumen were decisive in securing these key conquests.
Yet his greatest achievement was undoubtedly securing the necessary funding in record time for the military operation at Yorktown (1781), which delivered the final blow to the British by the Continental Army and Admiral de Grasse’s fleet.
It is precisely this victory at Yorktown (Virginia) that the reverse of the coin commemorates. Lord Cornwallis’s surrender — thanks to the support secured by Francisco de Saavedra, alongside military operations commanded by Washington for the Continental Army, Rochambeau for the French troops, and de Grasse for the fleet — hastened the end of the war.
