150TH ANNIVERSARY. OF ANTONIO MACHADO

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Antonio Machado, the Royal Spanish Mint is issuing a commemorative coin of this poet and playwright who belonged to the so-called Generation of '98.

Antonio Machado (1875-1939) is one of the most outstanding poets of 20th century Spanish literature and an emblematic figure of the Generation of '98. He was born in Seville and trained at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, where he absorbed humanist and educational values that marked his thought and work.

His poetic production evolved from an initial modernism, influenced by the aesthetics and sonority of the time, towards a more intimate and reflective poetry, charged with symbolism and commitment to Spanish reality. Machado always sought the essence of the human being and of Spain through the landscape and life experience, giving his verses a profound humanity and philosophical transcendence.

In addition to being a poet, he was a playwright and storyteller, collaborating with his brother Manuel on several plays. His life was marked by personal tragedy and exile during the Civil War, and he died in Colliure, France, in 1939. Machado is remembered both for the quality of his work and for his moral integrity and commitment to truth and justice.
