XIII Ibero-American Series: Ibero-American Capitals

The common theme of the XIII Ibero-American Series is IBERO-AMERICAN CAPITALS. Eight countries have participated in the series and have made a selection of monuments or views of these capitals, making the inclusion of colour even more impressive on the coins.

The obverses of the coins depict the national coat of arms of the country issuing the coin, surrounded by the others.

The reverse depicts a view of a monument or site in a major capital of each participating country:

Spain: Seville, Plaza de España.

Argentina: Buenos Aires, Puente de la Mujer.

Guatemala: Antigua Guatemala, Arch of Santa Catalina.

Ecuador: Quito, La Plaza Grande.

Nicaragua: Managua, Puerto Salvador Allende.

Paraguay: Concepción, Nanawa Bridge.

Peru: Lima, Fuente de la Fama and Lima Cathedral.

Portugal: Lisbon, Bica Elevator.

In 1992, the first Ibero-American series was issued. At the time, the simple fact that 14 countries agreed to mint a common series of coins with a common theme was a cultural, economic and political achievement.

To commemorate this union of cultures, the Ibero-American series was born and now, 32 years later, the collection has a place in the numismatic world.

The common theme selected for the 13th edition of this series is ‘Ibero-American Capitals’.

The obverses of the coins depict the national coat of arms of the country issuing the coin, surrounded by the remainder.

The reverse depicts the image of an important capital of each of the eight participating countries:  Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal and Spain.

The cities chosen by each country are:

Argentina: Buenos Aires. Women's Bridge.

Ecuador: Quito. La Plaza Grande.

Guatemala: Antigua Guatemala. Arch of Santa Catalina.

Nicaragua: Managua, with its Salvador Allende Port.

Paraguay: Concepción. Nanawa Bridge.

Peru: Lima. Fountain of Fame and Cathedral of Lima.

Portugal: Lisbon, Bica Elevator.

Spain: Seville, with its Plaza de España.

A commemorative silver medal is included in the collection with the same technical specifications as the coins.

The obverse of the commemorative medal features, as on previous occasions, the coats of arms of all the participating countries, Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, and Spain.
